Job description

Caregiving for a 94-year-old senior (180 cm, 92 kg) in Cologne – Rath. The senior suffers from progressing dementia/Alzheimer's and due to limited mobility, is permanently dependent on assistance; he uses a wheelchair. Assistance is needed for all activities, especially when getting up and sitting down — he must be transported to the toilet in the wheelchair for each visit, and the transfer must be supervised to prevent slipping, and he requires help with hygiene after using the toilet. Partial assistance is also needed for dressing and personal hygiene, but he can eat by himself. Light support by offering an arm is sufficient when lifting, as the senior cooperates. He must not be left unsupervised for long periods; if there is a need to leave for a few hours, arrangements must be made in advance with his daughter. He wakes up once at night and needs to be escorted to the toilet. No caregiving service visits. In addition to caregiving, all household tasks must be taken over — cooking, shopping, cleaning, and laundry —, walking with him, and accompanying him to the doctor. The senior lives alone in an 80 m² apartment, where the caregiver has a private room and internet access. Free time is by agreement, typically half a day off on Tuesday; work is only up to the agreed weekly hours. This is a long-term cooperation in a rotating system, but around 15.12, the regular caregiver returns. A caregiver with good to very good knowledge of the German language is required, patient, and preferably with experience with clients with dementia. Smoking is not tolerated, a driver's license is not mandatory but is welcomed. Arrival must not be at night, as the senior cannot hear the doorbell.

Frequently asked questions - Carers

Do you charge fees?

You don't pay our employment agency anything at all. We believe it is not right to charge people money in order to enable them to work, and so we offer assistance in finding job positions completely free of charge.

Do I have to be self-employed?

Most job positions in Germany are based on Slovak/Czech trade licenses, though employment contracts are possible with some families. In Switzerland, work is conducted under Swiss employment contracts.

Do I need a caregiving course to work as a caregiver?

A caregiving course is not required for families in Germany, but you need at least some experience of caring at home. In Switzerland, most families require a caregiving course.

How long will it take you to find me a family?

Finding a family is an individual matter for every candidate, so there is no exact time frame for when we will find you a family that suits you both. In some cases we can arrange a job within a few hours, at other times the wait is a few days. For families in Switzerland, the wait can stretch to a month because of high demand. We place candidates fastest in the summer months, June – August, and more slowly from the end of January to the end of March.

Can you help me travel? Who pays for the trip?

If you wish, we will organise your transport. We have worked for many years with transport companies that our caregivers are happy to use again and again. You can of course choose another way of travelling that you prefer. The caregiver pays for the journey herself and the family contributes to it – €180 – 300 in Germany, CHF 380 – 400 in Switzerland, depending on the offer. If you do not have the cash to travel to Germany, we can pay the fare for you and deduct it from your pay afterwards.

How long are rotations usually?

In Germany a standard assignment lasts 4 – 6 weeks, in Switzerland 2 – 3 months. Replacement assignments are shorter.

What is the salary and what does it depend on?

In Germany the pay is up to €3 500 a month as a self-employed caregiver – the exact amount is stated in each offer. It depends on your German, the client’s state of health and whether you care for one person or a married couple. In Switzerland the pay is up to CHF 3 500 net a month on a Swiss employment contract.

What level of German do I need to have for a carer job?

In Germany, families most often require intermediate to good German; some are happy with basic German and/or want another language, such as Czech, Russian or Bulgarian. Families in Switzerland require good German, although a solid intermediate level is sometimes enough.

Do you also offer work for male carers?

Yes, we successfully place male caregivers with families too.
